WOMEN’S club the Warrington Soroptimists is aiming to build a mountain of unwanted bras for charity.

Co-ordinator Jackie Alexander said: “It doesn’t matter what condition they’re in. If they’re wearable they will be sent to Africa for women there. Those bras not suitable for reuse will be taken apart and the parts recycled.”

Jackie urged women to get together with friends or relatives and gather bras for the collection and added: “We hope to gather enough to build a bra mountain in the middle of Warrington.”

Bras are complex to manufacture so very few developing countries have the facilities to make their own. Secondhand bras are therefore in demand with British ones regarded as being of a high quality.

The bras will be sorted and recycled by BCR Global Textiles, which works with charities in the UK and around to help create employment in developing countries.

Soroptimist International is a worldwide service club for women in management and the professions. It has close to 100,000 members in more than 100 countries and works to advance human rights and the status of women.

The Warrington club was founded in 1945. For more information, call Jackie on 07531 058013.
