Watch the Wii U's First TV AD

This article is more than 10 years old.

Want to know about the advantages of Nintendo’s Wii U? Want them clearly and loudly spelled out with big numbers next to them? Then Nintendo’s first advertisement for its new console is for you. Otherwise, you might have a hard time with it.

Aggressive narration and bullet points make this spot feel a little like a Powerpoint presentation – it gets the information across, but it isn’t helping me feel any particular way about the console. The initial marketing campaign for the Wii was kooky, brilliant, and pointed – it played perfectly into the image of Nintendo’s strange little box. This campaign is harder to make sense of, like the Wii U itself. It’s struggling to decide how it wants to be perceived by the public.

Nintendo still has time to refine that image – the Wii U has a lot to offer TV viewers, gamers and parents alike, and it’s just going to be a matter of finding how to communicate that to the broader public. Nintendo ushers in the next generation of home consoles on the 18th of November.
