PM urges unity, Abhisit lauds change

Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has urged unity among Thais in her New Year message posted on her Instagram and Facebook pages.

Ms Yingluck asked Thais to pray together that they will unite and love each other again and for those with different political views to reconcile for the benefit of the country.

She said she will be patient under the current circumstances and will work hard to promote unity and reconciliation and to protect the country, the monarchy and Buddhism.

Meanwhile, in his New Year message, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva proposed that 2014 be considered a year of reform.

He said that in time of uncertainty, the national reform push offers a ray of hope and opportunity. The mass uprising has awakened a kind of political awareness among Thais that has never existed before, he said.

He added that society is now transforming from one that is indifferent to corruption, to a society which rose up against the amnesty bill intended to whitewash the crimes of corrupt people. It has changed to a society that is calling for reform, rather than just the conventional political process involving elections.
