An African Union-backed court finds Hissène Habré guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Once a rebel, Habré took over Chad in 1982 after deposing a former ally in a coup. Thousands of people are thought to have died during his rule until he fled the country in 1990. Habré’s lawyers say they will appeal the verdict by the Extraordinary African Chambers
