The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is stepping up its efforts to give away debris from the ruined World Trade Center. The pieces of steel are forming the heart of memorials around the country and beyond.
The debris still awaiting a final destination is stored in an 80,000-square-foot hangar at Kennedy International Airport. The humidity is regulated so the steel does not rust.
