India: Economic woes are key factor in Gujarat election

Although Gujarat is one of the country’s top three states in terms of economic growth, it lags behind the others in many social indicators, including primary education, infant mortality and women’s health.

Tens of millions of people in western India are waiting to hear who their local leader will be. Results from Thursday’s election in Gujarat state are due to be announced on Monday.

The opposition Congress party is making a comeback, with a strong challenge to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been in power for 22 years in the state.
