Two Orang Asli boys photographed in July 2012. The Orang Asli are the indigenous people and the oldest inhabitants of Peninsular Malaysia. There is a high incidence of poverty among them — in 1997, 80 percent of all Orang Asli lived below the poverty line. This ratio is extremely high compared to the national poverty rate of 8.5 percent at that time.
